Professional and Social Status of Teachers in Polish Folk Schools in the Galician Village During the Period of Autonomy

Abstract

The aim of the article is to show the environment of teachers working in elementary (folk) schools in Polish villages in the times of autonomy (lasting from the mid-1860s to 1918). The article was created on a diverse information base, which consists of archival and printed sources, diaries and thematic literature. The professional and social situation of teachers became the subject of detailed analyses. The analysis of the source material shows that their professional and social status was not uniform and depended on various national, provincial and local factors. It was often difficult for teachers, especially from non-rural backgrounds, to understand the peasants, gain their respect and communicate with them. In addition, the modest remuneration did not contribute to building the prestige of the teaching profession. Positive manifestations of the presence of teachers in the countryside (apart from educational activities) were frequent involvement in local social and economic life. Teachers co-created intelligentsia circles in villages, which were still very few at that time.
