The Generation of ‘Dreamers, Milk-drinking Children of the Revolution’ in the Lens of Values (not)Present in Martial Law 82

Abstract

This article is an attempt to characterize the ‘martial law generation’ – in the sense of the narrative about oneself and the Others, close to everyday life – based on the formation that I personally call the generation of ‘Dreamers, milk drinking children of the revolution’. This formation is made up of students and alumni of the year 1982 of the General Secondary School No 4 in Częstochowa. I consciously establish such an analysis procedure, because from the sociological point of view, the ‘martial law generation’ does not exist, and their name is controversial. As a committed researcher who participated in those events, today I am describing and interpreting these (auto)biographical events through the lens of (not)present values under martial law. The article expresses humanistic concern, because the values constituting the generation of that time are often forgotten in the modern world. Why (not) present? Because hidden within the culture, but stirred up; forbidden in public, but shown in private; conscious or unconscious, but present in the cultural code of that era.
