Learning from Life in Biographical Narratives of Homeless People

Homelessness is a phenomenon that has occurred in all historical periods. Nowadays it is one of the most important social problems in both local and global scale. Due to coexistence of various social pathologies this phenomenon is described mainly in a pejorative way. What is emphasized above all is the drama of individuals, who for various reasons experience the deprivation of their elementary needs. In relation to these analyses a question arises: can this experience have any positive implications?
The article describes the reflections of homeless people on the educational aspects of their life experience. The theoretical framework is provided by the concepts of biographical learning.
The aim of the research is to get to know and show the individual experiences of homeless people and to extract from them elements of pedagogical character. The subject of analysis are biographical narrations concerning the experience of homelessness. The research adopts a qualitative perspective and an interpretative paradigm. The biographical method was applied. The research included five homeless people living in big city.
The research results show that every human experience subjected to biographical reflection may be conducive to understanding one's life and learning about oneself. The initiation of the process of learning from one's own biography may lead to the processing of experienced traumas and, what is more, to the constructive use of these elements of autobiography for further development.
