A Touch of Mysticism or Kairos in Biographies of Some Special Educators

Abstract

This article, by presenting specific breakthroughs in the biographies of selected prominent special educators, try to answer the question how much these transformations, analysed using Lévinas’s concept of the „Epiphany of the Face” were influenced by direct and personal encounters with people with disabilities. Among presented characters the most attention has been devoted to Philippe Pinel’s collaborator and mentor, his so-called „surveillant” Jean-Baptiste Pussin, who is hardly present in Polish educational-historical writing.
