The less known face of "The Old Doctor"

Janusz Korczak's contribution to the development of Polish pedagogy of people with intellectual disabilities

Abstract

The article presents little known aspects of Janusz Korczak's activity, related to his participation in the birth and development of Polish pedagogy of people with intellectual disabilities. Events presented in the text concern the territory the Congress Kingdom and they chronologically cover the period from the last decade of the 19th century to 1919, i.e. until Maria Grzegorzewska returns from Paris and begins her activities aiming in the organization of Polish special education. The article deals partly also with the later events i.e. of the period 1919-1939. The main topic is the collaboration of Janusz Korczak with Eugenia Lublinerowa and Dorota Zylberowa, founders of the first Polish private school for mildly intellectually disabled children, and the contribution of the "Old Doctor" to the activities of the Polish Society for Child Research, culminating in the creation of the first Polish public special school.
