Time and Thinking in Theoretical Terms

Anthropological and Methodological Contexts and the Specificity of Biographical Research

Abstract

The paper concerns the specificity of biographical research, analyzed in the context of the concept of time and thinking in the theoretical categories. The above-mentioned perspectives have an anthropological and methodological dimension and emphasize the interpretative dimension of this research approach. The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of the theory of thinking formulated by Philip C. Salzman based on contemporary socio-cultural anthropology – for the practice of biographical research. In this case, the theory is developed from the epistemological perspective, and indicates a specific status and direction of research, as well as the interpretations that result from it. The paper is a proposal of an application of, what Wojciech J. Burszt calls, ‘the foundations of anthropologically determined knowledge’, into the space of biographical research. In this perspective, time is an example of the category that categorizes phenomena/ experience in relation to biography and its individual and socio-cultural contexts.

Keywords:

biographical research, time as a category, anthropological contexts, thinking in theoretical categories
