‘I Have Been Bitten by the Indonesian Bug’

From a Dream to Home: A Place in the Biography of the Missionary Father Józef Glinka

Abstract

The article describes a special place in the life of Father Józef Glinka (1932–2018), a missionary from the Society of the Divine Word (Latin: Societas Verbi Divini – SVD) who lived and worked intermittently in Indonesia for 50 years. It details the places where he led his missions and which changed his attitude towards Indonesia. The dream place created in the spirit of his family mission tradition evolved into his own familiar place, becoming his home. The author presents the stages in which he got to know and ‘tamed’ a foreign place by engaging in researching and describing the peoples inhabiting the islands of Indonesia and developing an anthropology study programme at local universities.
