Brothers Kulawy and the Creation of Polish Institutional Completeness in Manitoba 1898-1905

Abstract

The article presents portraits of Kulawy brothers – Wojciech and Jan Wilhelm, priests of the first Polish Holy Ghost Parish in Winnipeg and it discusses their role that they played in creating instructional completeness of an immigrant community around the parish, seen as the center of religious, social and national life. The special attention is paid to the significance of language for creating an ethnic identity in context of the provincial legislation on bilingual education, and of the Protestant-Catholic conflict over bilingual schools in Manitoba, as well as the role of ethnic identification concerning the creation of ethnic boundaries among the parishioners and internal antagonisms
