Readaptation of Imprisoned Men in Biographical Narrative

Abstract

The primary objective of the penitentiary system is rehabilitation, meaning achieving a state in which most individuals serving prison sentences will be able to adapt to new social conditions after their release. Unfortunately, Poland has a high recidivism rate, as many individuals return to correctional facilities due to reoffending. This indicates the low effectiveness of the Polish penitentiary system in terms of preparing inmates for reintegration into society.

By using the biographical method, which allows for the analysis of specific cases, it can be observed that in most instances, the adaptation of former inmates to life outside prison depends solely on their motivation and willingness to change. The influence of prison staff in this regard appears to be insufficient, highlighting the shortcomings of the Polish prison system. The fundamental cause of its dysfunctions seems to be its politicization and susceptibility to populism. As a result, the system primarily focuses on using imprisonment as a means of isolating inmates from society rather than on effective rehabilitation efforts.
