The Importance of a Place in an Individual’s Biography
Abstract
According to Yi-Fu Tuan, the place closes the space, thus creating the interior and the exterior. The place is the location where the individual experiences his existence, thus the experience of the place is a natural human experience. The unique atmosphere of the place, its atmosphere, and its character determine the individual and social fate of the individual. It decides about the inseparability person and the world. As a result, it constitutes an integrity that is comprehensible to human cognition, resourcefulness, activity as well as dedication, and passion.
The meaning of a place is not only the effect of sensual experience but also of pragmatic functions. The aim of the article is to describe the meaning of a place in an individual's life. The basic material for the analysis is a narrative and biographical interview conducted with Mr. Antoni, who associated his adult life with the city of Tarnobrzeg, in connection with the development of the sulfur industry. For the narrator, it is the center of his adult life, filled with a wealth of personal experiences and memories. One's place of residence is endowed with meaning regardless of its historical or social time.
