The Lesson of Suffering in the Biographical Accounts of Seniors in Their Letters to Younger People

Abstract

The article presents the results of an empirical study of the suffering that older people experience in their lives. The study aims to understand the meanings that seniors assign to suffering and what young people can learn from old people’s life experiences. The research material includes letters written by seniors to younger people. The letters were subjected to qualitative analysis. People over 60 years of age (including students of the University of the Third Age) participated in the study. Letters represent people’s inner world, and are subjective. The analysis of the research results covers the following areas: the universality and acceptance of suffering, the meaning and types of suffering, the fear of suffering, the loss of family members and mourning.
