Educational Letters of Blessed Marcelina Darowska (1827-1911)
Abstract
The title of the presented text introduces the key concept of “educational letter.” This specific phenomenon forms a selected part of the extensive body of epistolary writing by Blessed Marcelina Darowska, in which the co-founder of Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary expresses her views on the education (understood as “all the conditions, processes and actions” conducive to the integral development of a human being) of individuals and communities. The structure of the article follows selected letters written by Darowska, focusing on the following three principal elements: 1) views on education and the tasks of educators 2) comments on the religious formation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, 3) advice given to novices. The article attempts to answer the following question: What educational values (contributing, by definition, to the development of the addressees of letters and persons indicated in them) can be extracted from the epistolary writings left by Marcelina Darowska?
