Zygmunt Kukulski, Stefan Kunowski and Teresa Kukołowicz

Three Pillars of Education for Teachers at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL)

Abstract

The aim of the article was to highlight the role and contribution of Zygmunt Kukulski, Stefan Kunowski and Teresa Kukołowicz to the development of education science at KUL. Founded in 1920, the KUL Faculty of Education was the second such department in Poland after the one at the University of Poznań. Prof. Kukulski was involved in the establishment and development of the KUL department. Unfortunately World War II interrupted these efforts. In 1944, in spite of the obstacles posed by communism in Poland, Prof. Stefan Kunowski took it upon himself to re-establish and maintain education science as a field of studies, making futile attempts to create a research institute. In 1981, there appeared an opportunity of reactivating and developing education science at KUL, also thanks to Prof. Teresa Kukołowicz. Kukulski, Kunowski and Kukołowicz were the three pillars of education science at kul from 1920 to 2000. In spite of difficulties, sacrifices and, sometimes, humiliations, these scholars did not renounce their quest in periods that were difficult for Polish statehood and science, developing education science at KUL.
